0 Welcome

Welcome to the Windows NT/Windows 2000/WDM Kernel-Mode Device Driver FAQ.

0.1 Where to find this FAQ

The authoritative copy of this FAQ will be maintained at the web site http://www.cmkrnl.com/faq.html . Until I find an efficient means of generating both HTML and plain ASCII text from the same source, it will not be posted to Usenet news or other plain text forums.

0.2 What's new in this version?

Some minor edits throughout. Section 2 is new with greatly expanded Windows 98, Windows 2000 (formerly NT 5.0), and WDM information.

0.3 Who are you and why are you doing this? Do you have a vested interest in the field?

Well, of course; I do NT/WDM driver consulting and training, and I even named my consulting company Kernel Mode Systems, so I get a free ad every time anyone, not just I, mention kernel mode drivers. However, I think I've kept the blatant commercialism to a minimum, and I've even included pointers to my competitors, on a pretty equal footing. If you have complaints in this area, just as if you have any other comments on this FAQ, please let me know. (The alternative---having someone write it who doesn't work in the field---does not seem to me to be preferable.)

0.4 What other on-line resources exist for driver writers?

Several. However, I am now maintaining my resources links separate from this FAQ.
