Cats

Cats have no sense of humor, they have terribly inflated egos, and they are very touchy. If somebody asked me why it was worth anyone's time to cater to them I would be forced to answer that there is no logical reason. I would rather explain to someone who detests sharp cheeses why he "ought to like" Limburger. Nevertheless, I fully sympathize with the mandarin who cut off a priceless embroidered sleeve because a kitten was sleeping on it.

God made the cat, so that man might have the pleasure of caressing the tiger.

I share my home with these cats. (And, yes, they do know and respond to their names; it's just that sometimes they choose not to acknowledge them.) They are sisters, though you'd never know it from their looks or personalities; about the only thing they have in common are white feet.

They come from a Himalayan mom and a black-cat father. Apparently there were only enough Siamese genes for one kitten, so the traits were divided between them: Chee got the Siamese-ish coloring and slightly crossed eyes; Tora got some Siamese-ish personality (she's outgoing and talkative) and the distinctive aw sound of the Siamese voice. If Chee were purebred she'd be a silver tabby-point Himalayan, or perhaps (given her white-gloved feet) a Birman (not Burmese, Birman). Tora is a basic tuxedo cat (black with white gloves and chest).

Chee is the prototypical aloof cat: "Yes, I want attention, but only when I say so." Tora is very outgoing and playful and silly; Chee usually looks on in disdain while Tora frolics. Both are very affectionate, but Tora demonstrates this more than Chee.

Bonnie is a stray I've been feeding for many years. She only has sight in one eye. Other cats (and other critters, like skunks and possums) of course show up to eat the food I set out, but I try to make sure this one gets to eat, since a cat with just one good eye is at a severe disadvantage.

Look, a cat person can go on and on about cats. If you're a cat person, you understand. If you're not, you won't, and that's fine too, but in that case you probably shouldn't go look at more and larger cat photos.
