Information Sites and other Net Resources

These sites offer free information related to NT drivers. Many also offer products and/or services.

Subheadings on this page:

Microsoft
FAQs and other developers' resources
Newsgroups
Mailing Lists
Hardware information
Other NT links (not driver-specific)

Microsoft

Yes, you already know about these links. I'm trying to be complete.

Microsoft DDK

The Microsoft DDK web site. Download the current DDK, among other things.

Driver Verify info

Windows 2000 includes some new features to support driver verification. A must read!

Microsoft HWDEV

This is where Microsoft used to send all driver writers before they had the DDK page. Now it is more focused toward resources for hardware developers. Still, there's a lot here that's of interest to driver writers.

Windows NT Kernel Mode Driver FAQ

Yes, this is a "sideways" link to my own FAQ page, mostly for the benefit of anyone else who links directly here instead of to my home page. (As Don Lancaster says, as a writer you should reference yourself every chance you get.)

www.sysinternals.com

Mark Russinovich's justly-famous "System Internals" web site, with numerous articles, free utilities (source code, including many very interesting pseudodrivers, included!). Also the home of dbgmon, the utility that catches kernel debugger output and displays it in a window on the local machine. No serious NT developer can ignore this site!

AskTheOracle

Driver resources, mostly links, but a very comprehensive set of links.

"NT Insider" by Open Systems Resources

OSR's web site includes back issues of their "NT Insider" newsletter. Some articles include downloadable source code. Also sign up for the newsletter here.

Vireo (now NuMega) Free Utilities

Download SrcToDsp, LastLine, and more.

Windows Driver Web Page

Cherry Hill Software's Windows driver resources page. Not NT-specific. Lots of links to related companies.

Intec DDK Group

A driver resources site - short FAQ, links, DDK bug list. Hasn't been updated for a while (of course, I'm a fine one to talk). A real problem, though, is that there are numerous errors and omissions in their FAQ. Reader beware.

Newsgroups

I know that Usenet newsgroups have a reputation for rudeness, if not outright hostility, but these are notable exceptions. Extremely good signal-to-noise ratio, very little "spam", and a very knowledgeable pool of "answerers" make these very valuable resources. Don't forget deja news when you're looking for past articles.

comp.os.ms-windows
.programmer
.nt.kernel-mode

The newsgroup for NT, Windows 98, and Windows 2000 driver questions.

microsoft.public.win32
.programmer.kernel

This is really supposed to be for questions about the Win32 kernel APIs. However, due to the confusion over Microsoft's several uses of the term "kernel", some NT driver questions get asked and answered here.

Mailing Lists

For public Q&A, I personally prefer newsgroups (see above) to mailing lists. However, these lists are very popular; many people don't want to set up yet another "Internet UI" (a newsreader), and some poor souls are on ISPs that don't carry news at all, or don't carry the driver-related groups, or carry them so unreliably that they might as well not. All of the comments I made about the quality of discussion on the newsgroups apply to these mailing lists as well, only more so. In addition, propagation of the mailing lists is almost always faster and more reliable than news.

DDK-L mailing list

This is not NT-specific, but includes NT driver development along with Windows 3.1 and Windows 9x drivers. There is a $15 fee after a one-month trial period. Put "subscribe" in the message body.

NTDEV mailing list

This is NT-specific, but not driver specific. Put "subscribe ntdev" in the message body.

NTFSD mailing list

Primarily addresses NT File System Driver development. Put "subscribe ntfsd" in the message body.

Jan Axelson's Lakeview Research

The source for information and tools relating to parallel ports, RS-232 and RS-485 serial communications, 8052-Basic microcontrollers, and making printed-circuit boards.

PLX Technology

PLX is one of the premier makers of PCI interface chips.

Windows NT FAQ

by SavillTech, Ltd. This is the standard NT FAQ that everybody points to (it says so right there in the domain name, ntfaq.com :-).
